Defiant Institutionalization: Routledge Studies On Modern Korea is an illuminating exploration of the complex interplay between institutions and social movements in South Korea. This thought-provoking book offers a nuanced understanding of how institutions shape and are shaped by resistance and defiance.

Bringing together leading scholars from diverse disciplines, Defiant Institutionalization examines a wide range of institutions, from the state and its bureaucracy to the labor market and the education system. The contributors explore how these institutions have shaped the trajectory of South Korea's development, and how they have been challenged and transformed by social movements.

One of the key strengths of Defiant Institutionalization is its focus on the role of agency in institutional change. The contributors show how social movements have played a crucial role in shaping the development of South Korea's institutions, and how they have used a variety of strategies, from mass protests to legal challenges, to achieve their goals.
