Early Life
Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, Macedonia. Her parents were Nikola and Dranafile Bojaxhiu. Agnes had two older sisters and a younger brother. Her father died when she was eight years old, and her mother raised the children on her own.
Agnes attended a Catholic school in Skopje. She was a good student and enjoyed helping others. At the age of 18, she joined the Sisters of Loreto, a religious Free Download of nuns. She took the name Teresa after Saint Teresa of Avila, a Spanish mystic.
Missionary Work
Sister Teresa was sent to India in 1929. She taught at a school in Calcutta (now Kolkata) for 17 years. In 1946, she received a call from God to leave the convent and live among the poor. She began by working in the slums of Calcutta, caring for the sick and dying.
In 1950, Sister Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity. The Free Download's mission was to care for the poorest of the poor, including the sick, the dying, the abandoned, and the homeless. Mother Teresa and her nuns opened a number of homes for the dying, orphanages, and schools.
Nobel Peace Prize
In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work with the poor and the dying. She used the prize money to expand her work and to open more homes for the dying. Mother Teresa continued to work until her death in 1997.
Legacy
Mother Teresa's legacy is one of compassion and service. She dedicated her life to caring for the poorest of the poor, and she inspired countless others to do the same. Mother Teresa's work has been recognized by people all over the world, and she has been canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church.
