Gabaldon was born in 1926 in Los Angeles, California. He was of Mexican-American descent, and his family struggled to make ends meet during the Great Depression. When the United States entered World War II, Gabaldon was eager to serve his country. He enlisted in the Army and was assigned to the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment.
In August 1943, Gabaldon's unit was sent to Italy to fight in the Allied invasion of Sicily. On September 13, Gabaldon was part of a group of paratroopers who were dropped behind enemy lines. The mission was to seize a key bridge and hold it until reinforcements arrived. However, the paratroopers were met with heavy resistance from the Germans, and Gabaldon was captured.
Gabaldon was taken to a POW camp in Germany. The conditions in the camp were harsh, and the prisoners were subjected to regular beatings and torture. Despite the hardships, Gabaldon never gave up hope of escape.
In January 1945, Gabaldon and a group of other prisoners made a daring escape from the camp. They stole a truck and drove for days, evading German patrols. Eventually, they reached Allied lines, and Gabaldon was reunited with his unit.
Gabaldon's escape was a major embarrassment for the Germans. It was the only successful escape by an American POW from a Nazi camp during the entire war. Gabaldon was awarded the Silver Star for his bravery and leadership.
After the war, Gabaldon returned to California and became a successful businessman. He never forgot the horrors he experienced as a POW, and he dedicated his life to helping other veterans. He became a tireless advocate for veterans' rights and founded the National POW/MIA Recognition Day.
Gabaldon's story is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the American soldier. It is a story of courage, resilience, and the unyielding bonds of brotherhood. No Man Left Behind is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the true cost of war.
