Peter Lombard (c. 1100 – 1160) was one of the most influential theologians of the Middle Ages. His work, the Sentences, was a standard textbook in theology for centuries. Lombard was a master of logic and his work is characterized by its clarity and precision. He was also a pioneer in the use of Aristotelian philosophy in theology.

Life and Work

Peter Lombard was born in Italy around 1100. He studied theology in Paris and became a professor there in 1136. In 1152, he was appointed Bishop of Paris.
