Early Life and Education

Sonia Sotomayor was born in the Bronx, New York City, in 1954. Her parents were Puerto Rican immigrants who worked hard to provide for their family. Sotomayor excelled in school and went on to attend Princeton University and Yale Law School.

Legal Career

After graduating from Yale, Sotomayor clerked for Judge Robert Carter in the Southern District of New York. She then worked as an assistant district attorney in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. In 1991, President George H.W. Bush appointed Sotomayor to the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

In 2009, President Barack Obama nominated Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. She was confirmed by the Senate in a 68-31 vote.

Supreme Court Justice

Sotomayor has been a strong and influential voice on the Supreme Court. She has written majority opinions in several landmark cases, including _Shelby County v. Holder_, which struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, and _Fisher v. University of Texas_, which upheld the use of race-conscious admissions policies.
