Early Life and Education
Rushdoony was born in 1918 in New York City. His father was a Russian Orthodox priest, and his mother was a devout Christian. Rushdoony was raised in a strict religious environment, and he developed a deep love for the Bible.
Rushdoony attended Wheaton College, where he studied philosophy and religion. After graduating from Wheaton, he attended Westminster Theological Seminary, where he earned a Master of Divinity degree.
Ministry and Career
After graduating from seminary, Rushdoony served as a pastor for several churches. In 1951, he founded the Chalcedon Foundation, a Christian think tank. The Chalcedon Foundation published a newsletter called The Journal of Christian Reconstruction, which promoted Rushdoony's ideas.
Rushdoony's ideas were controversial, and he was often criticized by both Christians and secularists. However, he remained steadfast in his belief that the Bible should be the foundation for all of society.
Ideas
Rushdoony's ideas were based on the belief that the Bible is the only true source of authority. He argued that the Bible should be used to guide all aspects of life, from government to education to family life.
Rushdoony was a strong advocate for homeschooling. He believed that the government should not be involved in education, and that parents should have the right to educate their children according to their own religious beliefs.
Rushdoony was also a strong supporter of the Christian Right. He believed that Christians should be involved in politics, and that they should use their influence to promote Christian values.
Legacy
Rushdoony died in 2001, but his ideas continue to be influential today. His writings have been translated into more than 20 languages, and he has been cited by many Christian leaders, including Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell.
Rushdoony's ideas have had a significant impact on the Christian homeschooling movement and on the development of the Christian Right. He was a controversial figure, but there is no doubt that he was one of the most influential Christian thinkers of the 20th century.
